Conjunctions


​Conjunctions are parts of speech that connect words, phrases, clauses, and sentences.

Typically, conjunctions are of three categories such as:

  • Subordinating conjunctions

  • Coordinating conjunctions

  • Co-relative conjunctions.

Subordinating Conjunctions:

Subordinating conjunctions are words that connect the independent and dependent clauses of a sentence. Dependent clauses joined with independent clauses form a complex sentence.

Given below is a list of some subordinating conjunctions :

  • After

  • Although

  • As much as/as soon as/as long as

  • As though

  • Because

  • Before

  • How

  • If

  • In order to

 

Application:

  1. He started the task after he was instructed. (Main clause + subordinate clause)

  2. Before he could figure out the solutions, the problem got bigger. (Subordinate clause Main clause)

  3. Because of his positive attitude towards life, he lives happily. (Subordinate clause + Main clause)

  4. In order to attain success, one must be persistent with hard work and dedication. (Main clause + subordinate clause)

 

Coordinating Conjunctions:

Coordinating conjunctions connect adjectives, nouns, and clauses that are similar parts of a sentence. There are 7 coordinating conjunctions in total and are abbreviated as FANBOYS.

  • For

  • And

  • Nor

  • But

  • Or

  • Yet

  • So

 

Applications:

  • He was frustrated by the late delivery of his food parcel.

  • Akash bought some chips, cold drinks, and some burgers.

  • He missed his lunch, nor did he have his breakfast.

  •  He failed numerous times but still didn’t give up.

  • Is he ok with his current job or is he looking for other jobs?

  • He was waiting for the whole day, yet the parcel didn’t arrive.

  • She could not find her dress, so she did not attend the party.

 

Co-relative conjunctions:

Co-relative conjunctions are combinations of coordinating conjunctions that connect adjectives, nouns, and clauses that are similar parts of sentences.

Given below is a list of some coordinating conjunctions: 

  • Either/or.

  • Neither/nor.

  • Such/that.

  • Whether/or.

  • Not only/but also.

  • Both/and.

  • As many/as.

  • No sooner/than.

 

Application:

Not only did he not eat his lunch, but he also didn’t eat his breakfast.

No sooner had he completed all the tasks than he was loaded with more.

Either the books will be delivered today, or I will cancel the order.

He neither likes computer games nor YouTube videos; he loves reading books.

She loves both reading and writing thriller novels.

He gave as many examples as possible.

He was such a great man that even after his death, people still remember him to this day.

No one knows whether he really loves boxing or if he is just doing it for the money only.
