Subject - Verb Agreement


Subject-verb agreement means that a subject and a verb must agree in terms of number and person.​​

The following are some general rules of subject-verb agreement:

If the subject is singular, the verb should also be singular.

The cat jumps over the wall.

There is a beautiful homestay on the other side of the hill.

He drives his car responsibly.

If the subject is plural the verb must also be plural.

The cats jump over the wall.

There are some beautiful homestays on the other side of the hill.

All off them drive their cars responsibly.​

If the subject is comprised of multiple nouns or pronouns and they are connected by ‘and’, the plural form of the verb should be used.

Rohit, Akash, and Deep are very good friends.

All my cats, dogs and bunnies eat at the same time.
